Creator Codes

Page history last edited by QueenLovenkraft 14 years, 10 months ago

Creator Codes is a system for content creators who sell or give away their products to mark it so that the next owner knows it's intended use and permissions.

Second Life's system only allows three types of mark on an item which show permissions. They are modify, copy and transfer. The new system, which SL is being asked to code as new permissions, has more options and covers more possibilities.

Creators can choose to add the code with the name or description of their item. An explanatory notecard should be added into boxes or included in a license note.

Codes and explanations:

Code A - Alterations only. This item will be modify, or copy and modify only. The creator allows the owner to modify the item to ensure a good fit, but does not want the item to be given away or sold. Examples of such items are hair that often needs to be adjusted in order to fit well, and it's better to make a copy to edit in case a mistake it made in modifying.

Code B - Buy/sell allowed. These items will have transfer permissions and the creator does not mind if the owner chooses to sell it at any time, in a store or yardsale or gives it away.

Code C - Copy only permissions. The creator wants the next user to only be able to make copies of the item. Examples of such work are designer skins.

Code D - Distribution only. The creator intends the item to be freely given with no charge, and no change of perms. The perms of the item can be anything to creator wants, the code letter tells users that regardless of the perms it shouldn't be sold. Examples of such work are those by Arcadia Asylum.

Code E - Exclusive use only. This is for copy and transfer or full perm items such as textures which the creator does not want to be resold as textures. Currently in SL a creator selling textures sets them as full perms which can give the impression to users that they can be used however they wish. Licenses help but they can be long and confusing to non-english speakers.

Code F - Full permissions. This means the creator wants the item to be used however the next owner wishes, resold, modified, given for free, used for profit etc. Examples of this are the goblin avatar made by Madcow.

Code G - Gift only. These items will be transfer only, or modify and transfer. The creator does not want their item to be resold in a store or yard sale. Their usual items will probably be no transfer and select items are made transfer only to be gifted. This code is useful for creators who do not want to see their original designs being sold in someone else's store.

One major difference with this system is that it shows clearly the creators intention when creating and boxing an item. This is important as it's not rare to find mistakes in vendors, permission error can happen through user error and SL bugs. If a creator does sell an item with full permissions by mistake, the code in the name or description will still show what they intended which can be used to prevent unauthorised reselling. The next owner will not have the excuse of 'the box was ticked to transfer and copy so I can do what I want with it'.

You can also place a sign in store to state your intentions for your products with explanation. If a person then obtains an item with full perms it is easy to show that they are exploiting an error or bug which is important in getting LL to take action. If an item gets copybotted and becomes freely available or is being sold it would make it easier to show that you never sell items with such perms.

The code should be placed at the end of the item name or in it's description. If the item is no modify people cannot remove the code letter. If the item is modifiable and worn such as hair, eyes, skin, system clothes, then the description rarely gets changed. If the item is modifiable and will be rezzed, such as furniture, you can hope that people will not change the name or item description and leave it intact.

As always, this will leave some factors open to the integrity of the user who may choose to ignore and abuse any permissions, but the system still gives more opportunities to show intentions for perms and so is more comprehensive that the LL perms settings currently in use.
